- On August 30, 2023, the Department of Environmental Science held a special seminar entitled "The peculiar breeding of the Pheasant-tailed jacana: study of a population in Kaeng Nam Ton, Khon Kaen” by Dr. Wolwenn Fresneau with 82 undergraduate and graduate students attended the seminar. Dr. Nolwenn is a visiting researcher from the Behavioral Ecology Research Group, Faculty of Engineering, University of Pannonia, Hungary. She is studying “Demographic drivers of sex-role reversal and skewed sex ratio in the Pheasant-tailed jacana” in collaboration with Dr. Wangworn Sankamethawee under the MOU between the Faculty of Science, KKU and Faculty of Engineering, UP. This study allows better understanding about how male biased adult sex ratio is generated in the polyandrous bird as well as its breeding behavior. The important take home message is that how the climate change and urbanization could have affected the population number, breeding success and adult sex ratio. This is very important information to help protect this bird species, its habitats and ecosystem goods and services we have gained from the wetland ecosystem.
