Ecology Laboratory— field exams at Nam Pong and Nam Nao National Park.

After a semester of learning in the class on key ecological studies such as plot sampling, limiting factors, species distribution, community similarity, vegetative structure analysis and ecosystem structure, students in the Ecology Laboratory course have to put these together to demonstrate their understanding on the Ecology subject. The students design their own study methods to examine the assigned ecosystem, including aquatic and forest ecosystems. Most importantly, they work as a team, deal with unexpected problems and enjoy good and bad time together with peers. Thumbs up everyone!

Nature Study and Bird Conservation Camp at Nam Nao National Park.

During the two-days weekend of February 18-19, 2023, the Student Club “Nature Study and Bird Conservation” at the Department of Environmental Science, Khon Kaen University organized the 20th Nature Study and Bird watching Camp at Nam Nao National Park. A total of 63 campers participated in the activity, including undergraduate students from several Faculties e.g. Engineering, Laws, Education, Humanity and Social Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture. A group of Environmental Science alumni also joined the camp. During the last eight years, the Club & Campers have recorded bird species at Nam Nao National Park, so these data help monitor bird community at the park. This year, they recorded at least 116 bird species during the two days’ activity. Moreover, the campers learned the nature surrounded, including native vegetation, ecosystems and forests. Most importantly, they experienced working as a team, problem-solving, being with others and explored the nature.

Our Departments and Programs

Overview

KKU as the largest university in the northeast is recognized as the leader of teaching, learning and research innovations. While Khon Kaen is the key trade and administrative hub of the northeastern Thailand and is on a main transport route between the south and the Mekong sub-region, KKU is placed to support the development of the northeast and its neighboring countries. Our department vision is to be a leading institution in environmental science at the national level.

Environmental Science

The Department of Environmental Science offered its first bachelor degree in 1993 with a small group of 15 students. Over 25 years, it is now home of more than 300 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. We have produced nearly a thousand of environmental science graduates working nationwide and internationally, and will continue growing to serve the country and greater Mekong subregion. Though bigger, all classes are oriented to make students feel being in a small classroom setting with hand-on experiences. Every semester, we organize field excursions in ecology, ecosystem protection and environmental management, which will help broaden student visions by connecting theories to real-world situation. Environmental work requires both knowledge and practical experiences because environment is our every day life.

Career paths

Approximately 60% of our B.Sc. graduates work in industrial and private sectors as an environmental officer, auditor, quality control officer and environmental consultant. About 20% go into governmental and non-governmental organizations, especially in areas of natural resource and biodiversity conservation, at local, national and international levels e.g., Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning and Wildlife Conservation Society. A growing number of new career opportunities is environmental businesses, especially consulting company and organic farming business. Meanwhile, 20% enter graduate schools. The majority of M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduates work in academic sectors, including university lecturers and researchers.

Activities of the Department.

The Department organizes excursions, field trips in ecology and environmental science for students every year. Environmental issues, including biodiversity loss, deforestation, water pollution, air pollution, global warming and climate change become a concern of many sectors both government and private. To become a leader in environmental conservation, students need to follow what is happening locally, nationally and globally. Field courses aim for students to have hands-on experience in environmental science and ecology. Working in the field will help broaden student vision by connecting theories to real-world situation. Environmental work requires both knowledge and practical experiences since environment is part of our every day life.
